I used to frequent other local gyms for years, but I never found what I was looking for until I joined American Family Fitness. My wife worked for Verizon and wanted to join AFF because several of her friends had joined (they’re all gone now!). I decided to join with her, and I found what I was looking for, which was quality equipment, no wait to use the equipment, and a friendly community of people that make you feel like part of a family.
For years I had experienced low back pain. When I started exercising regularly at AFF by taking Cycle classes and walking on the treadmill, my back pain virtually vanished — I no longer feel any pain! And in the last year, I’ve lost 25 lbs by changing my eating habits and setting a daily goal of burning 1200 calories every time I work out. I chatted with several AFF staff members, including trainers Collette, Leo, and Allison, about nutrition advice that helped me change my eating habits for the better. I appreciated their advice because they gave me their advice without “selling,” which showed me that they truly cared about my success. I’ve also learned from staff how to use equipment to suit my specific needs, and I regularly use the sauna for recovery.
I used to own The Last Stop, a Bar and Restaurant on Williamsburg Road before I retired, and I used my workouts and my community at AFF to help me keep my sanity with dealing with the stress. Owning a bar and restaurant can be stressful, and without AFF, I don’t know how I would have managed!
